Parent Newsletter 1/17 and1/24/2014

Hello! Below you will find the timeline for Course Selection for the 2014-2015 school year. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Course Selection Timeline:

-   January 28, 2014 – Pre-AP/AP Parent Night at MVHS

o   Gives parents information on each Pre-AP and/or AP class offered at the high school and what time of commitment this type of class entails

-   February 18, 2014 – Career Exploration and 4 Year Plan for current 8th graders

o   Students will use the results of a career exploration tool to help them plan out their high school four year plan. They will be provided a four year plan and their four year high school audit sheet to complete during this lesson. This plan and the audit sheet will then help them complete their course selection guide in the upcoming weeks and it will be on file with their perspective high school counselor the next school year so they are able to use it as a tool when they help students with class choice and career guidance

-   February 25, 2014 – Course Selection Review and Paperwork sent home – Current 8th graders

o   Counselors from both high schools will visit with our 8th grade students (MV and DH at the same time) about course selection paper work and guide, high school credits for graduation, Board of Regents, Core Classes versus Pre-AP Core Classes, elective options, etc

o   All paperwork will be due March 3, 2014 to their 8th grade teachers, which will then be given to high school counselors

-   February 26, 2014- Incoming 9th grade Parent Night for both MVHS and DHS

o   MVHS and DHS will be hosting Parent Nights to review “All you Need to Know” about course selection and to answer any questions parents may have about the transition to high school

o   This is being done AFTER course selection paperwork is given, so that you have them in your hands and can bring them to the Parent Night if you have any questions at all about the Course Guide or about the Course Selection Paperwork

-   February 27, 2014 – Career Exploration Lesson for current 7th graders

o   Students will complete a career interest survey. We will encourage students to be mindful of their career interest results as they use our new course selection guide to choose classes. This guide will show the students the connection between courses they take here and the courses offered in the Career and Technical Education programs and Elective programs offered at both high schools. In addition, this will help students begin and/or continue their career exploration as we gear up for Career Day

MOCSA: In November, we had scheduled MOCSA (Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault) visit our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classrooms. However, the 7th grade presenter had to cancel due to illness. This lesson was rescheduled for this coming Friday, January 24, 2014 in the 7th grade Social Studies classrooms. The top of this presentation is Sexual Assault. The lesson is done in a kid-friendly manner and is grade-level/age appropriate. It encompasses our counseling standards of raising awareness in the areas of bullying, cyber bullying, and maintaining healthy and appropriate relationships. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your student’s counselor, Polly Vader or Lori Schierts.

Community Service: Each year, Mill Creek students can be recognized for any community service they do. We have community service logs in the Student Services office. They can pick these up at ANY time. If students complete these and turn them in by the March deadline, they can be recognized for their efforts of 10 or more hours at the final pep-assembly of the year.

Career Day: THANK YOU to those of you that have already volunteered. We are working through all of the emails to respond to you about Career Day and will send more detailed information very soon. As of now, we have enough volunteers and look forward to this big event! If this changes, we’ll send out a request for more volunteers! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

To follow-up from Anti-Bullying Week, Red Ribbon Week, and our MOCSA lessons, we would like to share a statistic from CASAColumbia that can be found at the following website: http://casafamilyday.org/familyday/about-family-day/. They shared that “Nine out of 10 Americans who meet the medical criteria for addiction started smoking, drinking, or using other drugs before age 18”. CASAColumbia encourages parents to have open lines of communication with their children and to talk about the consequences of using drugs and alcohol. We hope to share information with parents throughout the year in regards to these important topics. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions.
