![]() Schoolwide Programs CHESS CLUB is a program for 4th and 5th grade students to use critical thinking, problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning while playing chess. It promotes good sportsmanship and is fun CHOIR is a program for 4th and 5th grade students to build a love of music. EARTH KEEPERS Students and staff meet after school on Thursdays to help with school wide projects and in the classrooms. They are able to use these hours towards their community service. LEGO ROBOTICS CLUB is a program for 5th graders to explore robotics. PALS is a group that is trained to greet new students and make the first few days at Starside for these students successful. A boy and a girl from each classroom, 2nd through 5th grade, are selected on friendliness and willingness to help. MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTSare daily announcements broadcasted to each classroom over our digital projectors. We share important reminders, birthdays, weather, activities, Spanish word of the week, student of the month, etc. The fifth grade students are given the opportunity to be anchors.
PRESIDENTIAL COUNCIL'S POINT OF LIGHT FOUNDATION Elementary students are asked to perform 50 or more hours of community service during a 12 month period. Schools who have 5% of their students reach this goal are named a School of Service. Starside has been a School of Service since 2002. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOOL (PDS) Starside has partnered with Kansas University to provide professional development opportunities to their education students. Starside staff collaborates with the university to mentor their teacher candidates and to provide them with a diverse group of children and staff. It is a learning process shared by both parties.
READING CLUB is a program for students to build a love of reading. They meet in the media center on Wednesday mornings. RUNNING CLUB is a program for 4th and 5th graders that are interested in learning about proper running techniques and improving cardiorespiratory endurance. SPANISH CLUB is an enrichment program to help our English speaking students learn Spanish. STUDENT COUNCIL representatives are elected in 2nd through 5th grade. There is a boy and a girl representing each classroom. Some student council activities include Spirit Week, Project Warmth, Caring is Sharing, etc.
SCHOOLWIDE TITLE 1 READINGis a supplemental reading program funded by the Title I grant given by the Department of Education. This is an extra reading class for students who need an extra boost in reading.

The program is based on 6 Pillars, the pillars being Respect, Responsibility, Citizenship, Caring, Trustworthiness, and Fairness. |
