A KANSAS ELEMENTARY COUNSELOR HAS… 

  • A counsleing certificate issued by the Kansas State Department of Education
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience
  • A Master's Degree in K-12 School Counseling with emphasis in guidance principles, counseling procedures, counseling theories, multicultural counseling, group counseling, individual counseling, educational measures, standardized testing, career education, parent education and guidance.

What does a School Counselor do?

  • Counsels with students
  • Counsels with families
  • Counsels with teachers, parents, other school staff members, and community agencies
  • Teaches classroom guidance lessons
  • Provides individual and group counseling
  • Promotes a positive school climate
  • Coordinates volunteering, communty service, and recycling
  • Serves as the building SIT team represetative (student intervention team)
  • Serves as the building 504 coordinator
