Dear Parent(s): Over the last semester, the district began to examine our middle school math placement procedures. National research continues to suggest that schools should have math programs that allow capable students access to Algebra instruction by 8th grade. It was determined that adjustments needed to be made so that all students were afforded the opportunity to maximize their math abilities. Math teachers from all three middle schools, along with building and district administrators, collaborated and created new math placement procedures. This committee believes that yearly placements for students will better meet the needs of each student. Beginning in the fall, middle school students will be placed in math courses on a yearly basis. This differs from past practice because placement will be reviewed yearly for each student and students will not automatically be advanced to the next course in the series the following year. These placements will be made based on data. For the placements beginning this fall, the following criteria were used:
6TH Grade COURSE II: 5th Grade Spring Math RIT ≥ 220 + Passing Score on State Assessment* 7TH Grade COURSE III: 6th Grade Spring Math RIT ≥ 225 + Passing Score on State Assessment* 8TH Grade ALGEBRA: 7th Grade Spring Math RIT ≥ 235 + Passing Score on State Assessment* *"Passing Score on State Assessment" is a 3 (Meets Standard), 4 (Exceeds Standard) or 5 (Exemplary). If it is determined by the student's teacher that the initial placement is too difficult for that student, there are procedures in place that will allow for a student's enrollment to be adjusted. In addition, students who perform especially well one year may propel to the upper course the following year. Yearly reviews of student math performance in conjunction with the flexibility to adjust initial placements will allow for all students to be enrolled in the appropriate course. If you have any questions about the new math placement procedures, please feel free to contact me. I'm looking forward to next year being a very successful one for your student. Sincerely, Tobie Waldeck Principal, Monticello Trails Middle School
