District Adjusts Final Day of 2011-12 School Year
The Board of Education on April 9 approved the district's recommendation to adjust the final day of the 2011-12 school year. With the mild winter, no inclement weather days were used, including two days built into the calendar for that purpose.
As a result, school in USD 232 will end two days earlier than originally published. The district will adjust the calendar as follows: the last day of classes for students in grades 1-11 will be Tuesday, May 22, and it will be an early dismissal day. The last day for Kindergarten and Early Childhood students will be Monday, May 21.
This change will not affect the release time for high school seniors. Commencement ceremonies will continue as scheduled.
Employees, such as teachers, will work their normal contract and end the school year as planned on May 24. The district will use the available time with employees to provide professional development.
The decision to end school for students two days ahead of schedule carries additional benefits. The district estimates $40,000 - $45,000, or more, in operational cost savings, in the areas of transportation, diesel fuel, supplies, etc. The last time the school district enjoyed a mild winter and ended school two days earlier than planned was the 2008-09 school year.
