Kansas State Assessments
Quick Guide for Parents
State Assessments
New for the Spring of 2025
The State of Kansas administered new ELA and Math state assessments in 2025.
- The previous ELA and Math assessments were created in 2015.
- After 10 years, the retired assessment items had become dated.
2025 was the first year of a new test, so scores cannot be compared to results from previous years.
The Kansas Assessment Program (KAP) is a set of tools and state tests that measure how well students are learning Kansas standards in:
-
English Language Arts (reading and writing)
-
Math
-
Science
-
History, Government, and Social Studies
These tests help teachers and schools understand student learning and also meet state and federal requirements.
What Are Standards?
Standards are the goals for what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade.
-
They are organized by subject (like reading, math, or science).
-
Each grade level has its own expectations.
-
Standards are not the same as curriculum. Curriculum is the plan, lessons, and resources teachers use to help students reach those goals.
How Students Show What They’ve Learned
Students show mastery of the standards in many ways, such as, but not limited to:
-
Class projects and daily assignments
-
Teacher observations
-
Homework, quizzes, and classroom tests
-
State assessments, which are given once a year
Together, these give teachers and parents a clear picture of student progress and growth.
