Nut Policy
Due to the large number of severe nut allergies in our district, the Student Nutrition Department prepares and produces school meals in a nut-aware environment. We also have many schools and classrooms that have been designated as peanut-restricted zones.
Elementary Schools: Our policy is generally to avoid all nut-related products at the elementary level. There may be nut products in these building for use in our catering program. These items are prepared on separate tables from where school items are produced, and thorough sanitation procedures are enforced. Our department checks the ingredient labels of purchased items for the elementary meals to ensure, to the best of our ability, that they do not contain nut ingredients or are processed in a plant that manufactures peanut products. Please note there may be pre-packaged Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich entree options in sack lunches at some sites.
Secondary Schools: We offer pre-packaged products that contain nuts in the secondary snack/a la carte options, as well as a pre-packaged Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich entree option periodically on our main menu. We do not prepare these items in our kitchens where any of our other foods are located. We also offer designated tables for students with peanut and tree nut allergies in the cafeteria seating area.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our department or the nurse's office at your student's school.
Disclaimer: We are committed to providing an allergy friendly dining experience, however, ingredients and nutritional content of food items served in cafeterias may vary. In addition, manufacturers may change product formulation or consistency of ingredients without the district's knowledge and product availability may fluctuate. While every effort is made to identify ingredients, it is not possible to assure against these contingencies. It is ultimately the responsibility of the student or guardian to determine whether or not menu items should be consumed. The Student Nutrition Department cannot guarantee the safety of students with life-threatening allergies.
Smart Snacks
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a final rule setting nutrition standards for all foods sold in school (Smart Snacks in Schools). The new guidelines went into effect July 1, 2014.
The law has specific nutrition standards for all foods and beverages sold to students outside the school meal programs; on the school campus; and at any time during the school day. This includes foods and beverages sold a la carte in the cafeteria, in school stores, at snack bars, through fundraising, from vending machines or any other venues that sell food to students. The school day is defined from the midnight before, to 30 minutes after the end of the instructional school day. Please see below for additional information.
Nutritional Standards
All food and beverage items sold to students on campus during the school day (as defined above) must meet specific nutritional criteria. For a detailed list of criteria, click the button below. Want some help determining if your organization's item is "Smart Snack" approved? Use the handy calculator tool provided by Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
Fundraisers
All food- or beverage-based fundraisers conducted on campus during the school day selling items for consumption on site must meet "Smart Snacks" requirements. Per the Kansas State Department of Education's fundraiser policy, student-led organizations may conduct one exempt fundraiser per semester for a duration lasting no longer than two consecutive days. Such fundraisers may not be conducted during breakfast and lunch meal service times.
Classroom Parties & Rewards
Although classroom parties, rewards and food brought from home are not subject to the Smart Snacks legislation, our district's wellness policy highly encourages healthier options for the well-being of our students. For a list of suggested items, including non-food rewards, please see the links below.
