Procedures for Voluntary Transfer Requests

The Board of Education established the Voluntary Transfer Program as a way to help balance enrollment by encouraging transfers to Lexington Trails Middle School or De Soto High School. The program is for USD 232 students who reside within the boundaries of other USD 232 schools. Placement will be determined on the number of requests received and will be approved on a space-available basis. Submitting a request to transfer does not mean approval.

The initial period of time within which applications can be submitted for the voluntary transfer option to attend Lexington Trails Middle School or De Soto High School for the succeeding school year is until JANUARY 16. Submitting a request does not guarantee approval, and is dependent on the number of requests, staffing patterns, and class sizes.

Voluntary transfer requests received after January 16 are also not guaranteed for approval as the district plans for staffing patterns, class sizes, etc., and will follow the same process and procedures as general intra-district transfer requests.

If the student is approved for a voluntary transfer, the approval covers their entire time at that building and does not need to be resubmitted each school year as long as the student remains in good standing.

Bus Transportation

Students approved to transfer to Lexington Trails Middle School or De Soto High School will be offered free bus transportation. Bus service is available on a first-come, first-served, space-available basis. Routes are developed and planned around those who have registered during the open registration period for bus transportation. The district, in collaboration with transportation provider First Student, works to keep bus ride times for students at a minimum, with a goal of a maximum ride time of approximately 45 minutes one way. It is our desire to shorten ride times, balanced with our objective to be as efficient as possible with transportation costs and resources.

Student Receiving/Participating in Special Services

The transfer policy/procedure applies to ALL students. Students participating in categories such as special education, English Language Learner, at-risk, Title 1, etc. may request a transfer following the approved process. The district will consider the class size, staff capacity, and building enrollment limits in making the final decision. A parent-requested transfer is not to be confused with placement decisions made by the IEP Team.

Extracurricular Activities

Secondary school students who have been approved for voluntary transfer of enrollment and entering high school for the first time shall be permitted to participate in interscholastic activities in accordance with regulations of the Kansas State High School Activities Association. For eligibility rules, exceptions and additional information, refer to the Kansas High School Activities Association (KSHSAA).

NOTE: In addition to the transfer rule, the student must meet all other rules and regulations, such as age, scholarship, student in good standing, etc. to be eligible for KSHSAA activities.
