Congratulations to Class of 2026 graduates Quinlyn Peters, Mill Valley High School, and Ashton Smith, De Soto High School for receiving scholarships from the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce and Shawnee Economic Development Council. Quinlyn and Ashton were awarded the scholarships on Wednesday, June 24.

Quinlyn Peters is the recipient of the Betty Charlton Scholarship Fund. This $2,000 scholarship was established in 1997 in honor of former Shawnee Chamber employee Betty Charlton, who was a strong supporter of providing education assistance to area students. This scholarship is granted to students who have demonstrated involvement in community leadership. Quinlyn plans to attend Emporia State University, where she will pursue a degree in visual arts education.

Ashton Smith is the recipient of the Career Ready Scholarship, awarded by the Shawnee Economic Development Council. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates a commitment to their chosen trade through previous coursework, apprenticeships, or work experience. The scholarship can be used toward tuition, books, or necessary tools, for students seeking a career in construction or construction trades. Ashton will be attending the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 12.
