USD 232 is proud to celebrate Deborah Ricker, principal at Cedar Trails Exploration Center (CTEC) – Early Childhood, for receiving the 2026 Whelan Leadership for Learning Award as a member of the Early Childhood Leadership Cadre.

The Recognition & Dissemination Committee of the University of Kansas Department of Special Education recognizes educators each year whose exceptional leadership advances meaningful learning opportunities for every student. This award is named in honor of Dr. Richard Whelan, who was known for his leadership, collaboration, and advocacy for all children, but particularly those with learning and behavioral challenges.

The 2026 Whelan Leadership for Learning Award recognizes the Early Childhood Leadership Cadre, comprised of Principal Ricker and 14 other leaders from school districts in Northeast Kansas, for their exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening and sustaining high-quality early childhood programs. Through their collaborative vision, shared expertise, and dedication to implementing innovative, evidence-based practices across the region, these leaders have significantly advanced opportunities for young children and families. Their collective efforts are helping to ensure school readiness, promote lifelong success, and create a strong foundation for future learning in the communities they serve.
