Tornado Damage at Mill Valley High School
Updated July 9, 2024
- North Fieldhouse (estimate for repairs in progress with engineers, insurance, and architects to replace roof trusses and roof)
- A temporary fence has been placed around the fieldhouse for safety reasons. We have received the report from the Forensic Structural Engineer. It was determined that due to extensive displacement of the wood-truss roof framing, that a full removal and replacement of roof trusses and roof was needed. The Engineer determined that the concrete masonry units (CMUs) lacked any tornado damage. We are in the process of investigating options on the north fieldhouse about repairs/reconstruction and timelines.
- Stadium Scoreboard = $29,945.50
- The MVHS stadium scoreboard was a complete lose due to the tornado. The lead time for a new scoreboard is ten weeks. To have a replacement installed by the first home football game on September 13th, the district ordered a scoreboard to replace the damaged board. The replacement was ordered on June 20th. The scoreboard will be the exact same as the damaged board.
- Baseball Scoreboard = $23,405.50
- After having the MVHS baseball scoreboard reviewed, it was determined that the middle section of the scoreboard needed to be replaced. The district ordered a replacement section for the scoreboard on June 20th from Athco in Lenexa. The replacement is the exact same as the current scoreboard.
- Main Gym Floor, repairs to just a section of the floor (rainwater leaked through roof when a HVAC unit was blown off its curb on the roof) = $12,096; completed June 19
- Rooftop HVAC unit = removal of damaged unit $26,800; Replacement estimate is $268,952 - The lead time on a replacement is 12-16 weeks.
- Ticket booths and storage sheds = waiting on replacement estimates
- Additional items (waiting on quotes/estimates)
- Tennis Bleachers
- Stadium and Tennis Court Fencing
- Stadium Sound System (speakers were attached to damaged scoreboard)
- Athletic Equipment and Uniforms that were in storage sheds
The district will continue to work with insurance to secure approval for reimbursement.

USD 232 began receiving notifications shortly after 6:00 a.m. Monday, May 20, of storm-related damage sustained overnight to structures and fencing within the Mill Valley High School outdoor athletics complex.
While crews were conducting an initial assessment of that damage, staff inside the school reported a strong odor of natural gas. Crews immediately shut off the gas supply following district safety procedures.
At this point, USD 232 decided to cancel classes for Mill Valley High School out of an abundance of caution. Upon further inspection, crews identified a gas line on the school roof that was compromised by high winds. The gas line had been connected to an HVAC unit, which is now isolated with repairs underway.
Most of the storm damage is contained to structures and fencing within the school’s outdoor athletics area. Cleanup of debris will commence as soon as possible and will take time. For planning purposes, there will be no access to MVHS athletic fields and tennis courts until further notice.
After a full inspection, Mill Valley High School is safe for staff and students to resume classes on Tuesday, May 21.
The only other report of storm-related damage is at Clear Creek Elementary School. The high winds damaged shingles on the roof.
We are grateful that the damage was primarily contained to the Mill Valley athletics area. Thank you for your continued support of USD 232.
