School Facilities Improvements

  • Conceptual design documents and cost estimates located at the end of this webpage.

New Theaters

  • De Soto High School and Mill Valley High School

Current theater facilities are small and inadequate to support 5A/6A high schools, especially with the increase in student population. Existing theaters each have a capacity of 350. The proposal calls for new theater space at each high school to more than double the seating capacity to nearly 800, better supporting our fine arts programs. The spaces would also be used for large class meetings, other school activities, and community events.

Once the new theaters are constructed, the existing theaters would be repurposed to meet student needs and increase school capacity with additional learning spaces.

Renovate Elementary Playgrounds

  • All elementary playgrounds would be resurfaced, replacing the current rubber mulch, which is problematic for students and families. The new surface solution would enhance the safety of each site. Some playground equipment would be replaced due to age (up to 20 years old), which is beginning to fail making repairs costly. All playgrounds would be updated to be accessible to all students and ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The photographs on this webpage are examples of playground renovations.

Stadium Renovation

  • De Soto High School and Mill Valley High School

Current facilities are inadequate to support 5A/6A high schools, especially with the increase in student population. This proposal calls for expanded seating capacity at both schools of up to 5,000. Facilities would be updated to meet requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The expanded seating capacity would also better accommodate growing school events, such as outdoor graduation, games, meets, and community events.

At De Soto High School, the homeside seating would be relocated to face east. Both facilities would also add much needed storage.

South Field House Addition

  • Mill Valley High School

The current field house is inadequate to support a 5A/6A high school. A new field house and concessions area would be constructed on the south end of the track and field. The existing small field house and concession area would be updated.

Field House Upgrade

  • De Soto High School

The current field house and concessions area at DHS is 20 years old and is inadequate to support a 5A/6A high school. The facility would be updated to better meet the needs of the school's growing population.

New Competition Gym

  • Mill Valley High School

The current competition gym is inadequate to support a 5A/6A high school, with the increase in student population. This proposal calls for a new, larger competition space with a seating capacity of approximately 2,800 to 3,000 that will better accommodate 5A/6A school activities, physical education programs, and indoor graduation ceremonies. The existing competition gym would become the auxiliary gym once the new space is completed.

The current auxiliary gym would be repurposed to increase spaces for the wrestling and weights programs at Mill Valley High School.

Increased Space for Wrestling & Weights

  • Mill Valley High School

The current spaces used for wrestling and weights programs are inadequate to support a 5A/6A high school. This proposal would repurpose the current auxiliary gym to increase the space used for these programs to better accommodate the student population and student safety. The wrestling space is also heavily used by the community for youth leagues and organizations.

Resurface Tennis Courts

  • Mill Valley High School

The current tennis courts at MVHS are in need of repair to ensure longevity.

Complete Track Renovation

  • Mill Valley High School

The current track is in need of repair and is due for resurfacing.

Storm Water Management

  • Mill Valley High School

Storm water management is required by city ordinance when sites are altered.

Restrooms & Concessions Space for Track & Field

  • Mill Creek Middle School

There are currently no restroom facilities at the track and field for Mill Creek Middle School. When hosting outdoor events, visitors must walk to the school and enter the building, requiring the school to keep the facility open during outdoor events. New restrooms, which would meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, would be located at the track and field. This would also add space for concessions.

Cafeteria Expansion

  • Starside Elementary

The current cafeteria space is inadequate to support the increase in student population. Starside Elementary has the smallest cafeteria of all the elementary schools in USD 232.

Baseball & Softball

  • De Soto High School and Mill Valley High School

The schools currently do not provide equitable on-campus facilities for baseball and softball. This proposal would ensure compliance with federal law under Title IX.

DHS - Upgrade softball field and add baseball field.

MVHS - Upgrade baseball field and add softball field.

Soccer Field Improvements

  • De Soto High School and Mill Valley High School

This proposal calls for adding artificial grass to the soccer fields at both high schools. Turfed fields would provide much greater flexibility in use and scheduling for classroom needs, school activities, and community use. Additionally, player dugouts and storage would be constructed at DHS.

Additional Parking

  • De Soto High School

The current number of parking spaces available at DHS is insufficient to accommodate growing enrollment, school/staff capacity, events, and activities.

Other Planned Projects

  • De Soto High School and Mill Valley High School

Depending on remaining funding at the end of the bond issue, the school district would plan to address the following needs.

    New entrance/exit at DHS
Currently, all traffic exits onto 91st Street. As student enrollment continues to increase, an outlet to 87th Street would help alleviate traffic congestion and increase safety.

Add artificial grass to on-campus baseball and softball fields
Turfed fields would provide greater flexibility in use and scheduling for classroom needs, school activities, and increase availability to the community.
