Congrats to Michael Pierce, para educator at Mill Valley High School, for receiving the USD 232 Making a Difference Award for the month of November. This award, sponsored by Great American Bank, is given monthly throughout the school year and was created to celebrate the exceptional teachers and staff in USD 232 who are truly “making a difference in the lives of young people.”

Mike has been a para educator at USD 232 since 2011. For three of those years he also served at the Science Olympiad sponsor. Before coming to USD 232, Mike was a Systems Engineer for BNSF for 9-years after studying Information Technology at Johnson County Community College. Mike has always been active in his community; he served as a firefighter and EMT for over 13-years, provided foster care for 10-years and was a Families Together Advocate for over 3-years.

Here is an excerpt from his nomination:

Mike has developed a very positive relationship with [our son] that involves trust, loyalty and humor.  Mike goes above and beyond to provide services to my son and to help him be successful.  Mike has gone out of his way to attend CTEC so [our son] can receive services there to be able to participate in the program.  Mike gives his time after school for 30 minutes to help him wrap up his days’ work. Additionally, our son exploded in the acceleration of learning when Mike became involved in his life.  We used to worry that [our son] would only be able to get so far, but after his time with Mike, those worries have been shattered and has shown us that he can attain success in his future.

The school district and the USD 232 Education Foundation present the Making a Difference Award cooperatively with the program being sponsored by Great American Bank in De Soto.

Nominations are currently accepted for the Making a Difference Award for the month of December. Nominations are due December 31, 2021. Monthly entries are encouraged as new nominations are reviewed on a monthly basis.
