Philip Kaul, the Assistant Director of Bands at De Soto High School, was recognized as the USD 232 Making a Difference Award winner for May 2022 during the All-District Convocation Event on Wednesday, August 10. This monthly award is sponsored by Great American Bank in De Soto and was created to celebrate the exceptional teachers and staff in USD 232 who are truly “making a difference in the lives of young people.”

Philip, an alumnus of USD 232, teaches band at De Soto High School and also serves as the assistant coach for the DHS Scholar’s Bowl. He taught in the Shawnee Mission, Blue Valley and Perry-Lecompton School Districts prior to coming to USD 232. Philip earned his Bachelor and Master Degrees in Music Education from the University of Kansas where he also was a Marching Jayhawk Drum Major.

Here is an excerpt from his student nomination:

Mr. Kaul is one of the most influential people in my life; he is always kind. He encourages all students of all playing levels to not only practice like all the others but he opens all the festivals to all the bands and this year gave me so much confidence in my playing. I am happy to say that both academically and emotionally I would not be the person I am today without Mr. Kaul I sincerely hope you pick him because he is a great man.

Thanks to Great American Bank who will be sponsoring the Making a Difference Award again for the 2022-23 school year! The USD 232 Education Foundation is currently accepting nominations for the next Making a Difference Award! Nominations will be received through the end of September 2022 with the next award being presented at the beginning of October. Monthly entries are encouraged as new nominations are reviewed monthly.
