The USD 232 Board of Education approved the addition of Unified Bowling as a sport at their meeting on September 13, 2021. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) partnered with Special Olympics Kansas to encourage and develop Unified Bowling through special memberships in Kansas.
For the first year of this new program, students from both De Soto High School and Mill Valley High School will come together and form one district team. Individual bowling teams consist of two athletes with special needs and three typical peers. MVHS teachers Jamie McKernan-Pollard and Amy McClure are serving as head and assistant coach, respectively, for this inaugural year.
Special Olympics Unified Sports is an inclusive activities program that combines an approximate equal number of Special Olympics students with intellectual disabilities and students without intellectual disabilities on teams for competition and inclusive activities fostering an environment of social inclusion. This new, state-wide program will create opportunities for students across USD 232 to have increased opportunities for while-school meaningful inclusion and leadership activities.
