Top-Ranked High Schools

DHS and MVHS Ranked among Best High Schools in Kansas

De Soto High School and Mill Valley High School of USD 232 are among the Best High Schools in the nation and State of Kansas according to U.S. News & World Report.

The publisher released its 2018 national and state rankings, placing DHS and MVHS among the Top Six Percent of all high schools in Kansas, of which there are 311.

DHS and MVHS are also top-ranked nationally of more than 28,813 high schools in the country.

The U.S. News rankings include data on public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments, their graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college.

To produce the 2018 Best High Schools rankings, U.S. News & World Report teamed with North Carolina-based RTI International, a global nonprofit social science research firm. RTI implemented the U.S. News comprehensive rankings methodology, which is based on these key principles: that a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show it is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.

A four-step process determined the Best High Schools. The first three steps ensured that the schools serve all of their students well, using their performance on the math and reading parts of their state proficiency tests and their graduation rates as the benchmarks. For those schools that made it past the first three steps, a fourth step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.

State Rankings

For the second consecutive year, U.S. News used a methodology to enable more qualified schools to be numerically ranked within their own states. As a result, this year in the Best High Schools rankings, 885 bronze medal winners were numerically ranked in their state. Bronze medal winners had to have a CRI value of greater than or equal to 10 to be numerically ranked in their state.

Overall, the 2018 Best High Schools state rankings are based on whether a high school is nationally ranked gold, silver or bronze in their state and has a CRI value of greater than or equal to 10. Bronze medal schools with a CRI value of less than 10 and those without a CRI are listed alphabetically within their state.
