Riverview Elementary teacher named a 2023 KS Horizon Award Winner
Tuesday, January 3, 2023
Congratulations to Sydney Sieben for being named a 2023 Kansas Horizon Award Winner. Sieban received a surprise phone call on January 3, 2023, from Kansas Commissioner of Education, Dr. Randy Watson, informing her of the recognition.
“We are fortunate to have such outstanding teachers in our state’s classrooms,” Watson said. “I want to commend all Horizon Award recipients. Because of them, we move closer to our vision of leading the world in the success of each student.” Sieben is one of 32 teachers from across the state to receive the special award.
The Horizon Award is a program developed by the Kansas State Department of Education that honors and recognizes exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding. The program is a regional competition with four regions corresponding to the state’s U.S. Congressional districts. Four elementary and four secondary classroom teachers may be selected for the award from each region for a possible total of 32 teachers in Kansas.
Sydney Sieben, now in her second year of teaching, is a fourth grade teacher at Riverview Elementary in Shawnee. Sieben will be individually recognized during a luncheon at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) conference in February. Also, she will be invited to participate as a special guest in the two-day KEEN conference.
