Starside Elementary teacher named 2024 Horizon Award Winner
January 11, 2024
Congratulations to Taylar Flaming for being named a 2024 Kansas Horizon Award Winner. Flaming received a surprise phone call on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from Kansas Commissioner of Education, Dr. Randy Watson, informing her of the recognition. Flaming is one of 32 teachers from across the state to receive the special award.
Taylar Flaming, in her second year of teaching, is a third grade teacher at Starside Elementary in De Soto. Flaming, pictured center, is joined by (from left) Superintendent Cory Gibson and Starside Principal Jan Hicks. Flaming will be recognized during a luncheon at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) conference in February. She will also be invited to participate as a special guest in the two-day KEEN conference.
The Horizon Award is a program developed by the Kansas State Department of Education that honors and recognizes exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding. The program is a regional competition with four regions corresponding to the state’s U.S. Congressional districts. Four elementary and four secondary classroom teachers may be selected for the award from each region for a possible total of 32 teachers in Kansas.
“Taylar is a great team player at Starside,” shared Starside Principal, Jan Hicks. “She seems to have an old soul and be so knowledgeable beyond her years. She is fantastic with students, parents and staff members. She has a minor is special education from Pitt State. Because of this, I made her a SPED classroom. She has done a remarkable job working with the equipment necessary for her students and helping them be successful.”
