Kaitlyn McGill, a 3rd grade student at Cedar Hills Elementary School in the Blue Valley School District, is the 2024 Johnson County Spelling Bee Champion. Kaitlyn now advances to the state competition with the goal of reaching the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The county competition was hosted by Unified School District No. 232 (USD 232 De Soto) at Mill Valley High School in Shawnee on Saturday, February 3. The Bee brought together 76 of the top spellers in the area from public and private schools.
Spelling bee participants vied for a spot in the Kansas Sunflower Spelling Bee, which will be held in Salina in March. Kaitlyn took home the county championship trophy by correctly spelling the word “Corinthian.”
Jiya Bhavsar, from Briarwood Elementary, in the Shawnee Mission School District, is the runner-up and state bee alternate.
The 2024 Johnson County Bee would not have been possible without the leadership and organization of Mrs. Jeri Powers, District Literacy Specialist, with USD 232. Dr. Joseph Kelly, Director of Secondary Teaching & Learning served as spelling bee pronouncer. Special thanks to the coordinators of the event, Mrs. Michelle Hite and Dr. Ceresa Schaffer, both with USD 232.
