Kansas Communities that Care Survey

Posted December 19, 2022

USD 232 will again provide the option for students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 to participate in the Kansas Communities that Care Student Survey.

This survey is opt-in only, and students will not participate in this survey if permission has not been granted by parents/guardians. If you want your child to participate, please complete the online permission form in Skyward Family Access from January 5, 2023 to January 17, 2023.

The survey will be available from January 19-31.

What is the survey?

The Kansas Communities That Care Survey is anonymous and available statewide. This survey is a valuable tool to help understand how students behave, think, and feel about alcohol, marijuana, and other drug use, bullying and school safety. The KCTC survey measures teen substance use, delinquency, and related problem behaviors in schools and communities. The survey gives insight into the problems students face and shows what can be done to help them succeed. The district also uses information from this anonymous survey to apply for grants that may help address students’ issues related to alcohol and drug use, bullying, and safety.

The survey is provided by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, Behavioral Health Services Commission and administered by Greenbush – The Southeast Kansas Education Service Center, Research and Evaluation Department.

What are the survey questions?

We advise parents to review the survey questions, which are posted online. You may also be interested to know the following:

  1. It is completely anonymous. Students will not be asked for their names on the questionnaire, nor will anyone be able to connect any individual student with his/her responses. School staff will not see any one student's responses, but only summaries of results.
  2. Participation is entirely voluntary. Parental consent is required. Your child may decline to participate in the survey, even with parental consent, or skip any question they do not wish to answer.
  3. USD 232 will not participate in any of the optional modules related to “Family,” “Gender Identity,” and “Sexual Orientation.” Students will not receive those questions.
